Spanu, a calm and concentrated man, from Laerru, a small town in the province of Sassari in Sardinia  
This is the home of a masterly craftsman who is probably the only one CARVER IN THE WORLD to create his pipes from the root to the finished unique pipe. Tom Spanu and his brother Augusto cultivate a 100 ha forrest leased by the forestry commission.

There, they chose and dig the precious root of the erica arborea. The tall shrub should be at least 60 years old before it can provide the suitable source material for high quality pipes and can be considered to be ripe by Tom Spanu. The woods that seem to be suitable are examined with an expert look and carefully exposed
